Working Class Zero

My father who had recorded albums from HMV, used to tell me stories of recordings at the HMV studio. The only studios I knew as a kid were the studios of Aakashavani and Doordarshan. In 1996 I got my first assignment as a music director for a film and I entered an audio studio to record my own music for the first time. This worked as an inspiration and within a few days I set up my own experimental workstation. All that my workstation had was an assembled computer, a stranger cube 80, an Ahuja ASM 58 microphone and a Videocon cassette recorder. With this I recorded more than 40 songs on 2 cassettes and submitted to HMV. This gave me my chance to record at the HMV studio that I had heard so much about.

With everyone’s good wishes, my dream of a professional setup came true when I set up my own studio – WORKING CLASS ZERO in 2008.

I work on the mac platform and I started with a G5 mac desktop. In Feb 2010, I shifted to a power mac 8 core machine. I pride myself for being quite a pro on Logic Studio Pro and it goes without saying that I use Logic for all recordings and arrangements. Later I got myself a Neumann TLM 49 microphone and a focusrite preamp from the US. Little by little my studio is now fully functional and I am most comfortable recording at WCZ with my friend Pom as the recordist.

WCZ, is not just a studio it is also a production house from where I have produced, recorded and mastered Na Hanyate. Mahangar@Kolkata was my first work from here. Recording ‘Condition Free’ with so many kids was quite a challenge and I think we fared very well, thanks to WCZ.

My new dream now is to be able to record a full band LIVE with acoustic drums, bass, guitars, vocals and keyboards all at one go from my studio floor which also doubles up as the Fossils rehearsal pad.
